Review
The Comprehensive New Testament is a careful but readable modern translation of the New Testament and an outstanding ancient bibliography. It is also an accessible introduction to textual criticism for the non-specialist. While it providentially supplies a de facto parallel Bible...The Comprehensive New Testament goes an extra step by also placing ancient sources in the hands of readers. --Review of Biblical Literature 2009 by the Society of Biblical Literature

Five stars out of Five! In the words of the editors, from their preface, in presenting another translation to an already voluminous field, their effort has been to translate the right words and not words created by scribal mistakes or editorial changes. This is a worthwhile effort and should prove to be a meaningful reference. --Joyce Rice, ForeWord CLARION Reviews

A unique, new translation...represents an enormous amount of valuable research...this translation does read well and is no doubt accurate. And the footnotes are scholarly, indeed. --Bible Editions & Versions, Volume 11 April June 2010 No. 2, Journal of The International Society of Bible Collectors

Comprehensive but not complicated
By S. Utts
As I opened the package containing TCNT I was delighted to see how lightweight but sturdy the volume is, but when I opened it to the preface I was delighted because from the start this translation has helps that I have not found in other Bibles. In the preface there is an easy-to-use explanation of the footnotes that the reader will find on every page of TCNT, and a concise explanation of works such as the Apostolic and Patristic Writings, Dead Sea Scrolls, Epic of Gilgamesh, Rabbinic Writings, Tacitus, etc. Those who are new to the Bible are not likely to have heard of some of these before, but for those like myself who have studied the Bible for years, most have not had the time to go to a library and dig for that type of information. It is provided here in the preface.

Another thing I found wonderful is the paragraph in "FInal Notes" honoring the editor's grandparents for the faithful way they served G-d. So often we go through life hoping that the way we raise our children will result in their becoming people of faith when they are old enough to choose. This paragraph will encourage the reader that faith does not develop in a vacuum and that parents and grandparents who faithfully introduce children to the Bible will indeed be planting the seeds from which the faith of these children will grow.

As to the translation itself, the type is easy to read, even for a person like me who was dealing with vision problems. This translation is very easy to read and understand, so even people new to the Bible will be able to grasp the concepts as the NT authors lay them out. The footnotes are ample, easy to understand, and if people are already advanced in Bible study, they can use the footnotes as a springboard for more study at their own pace.

At the end of the text of the TCNT, the editors have made an extensive section as a "Cross Reference Index" for each book of TCNT. This goes verse-by-verse and even has bolded sections outlined in black of explanations that explain portions of the Scripture that might be puzzling to a new reader.

I highly recommend TCNT! This is the first NT translation I have found that is easy enough for seekers yet offers challenges for those who are proficient in Bible study. It would be great for students and can be carried easily in a backpack to Sunday School. It is reasonably priced so that each child in a family can have his/her own copy.

Long Overdue
By Peter McGowan
For all its self-proclaimed excellence about an accurate translation, my judgement is that is very good - just as good as the big four: NIV, NASB, ESV and NRSV. The English in the latter four is far more polished. However, this is not the main purpose and value of this invaluable book - it is the extensive cross reference system which consists of the following in foot-notes on each page:
* Variations in the underlying Greek text between the NA vs Alexandrian vs Byzantine vs Majority text, vs etc
* Variations in the some of the major English translations and the Greek text they have assumed
* Alternate translations when Hebrew or Aramaic idiom is used
* Sources of Quotes or illusions from the Old Testament, where they exist
* Sources of quotes or strong illusions from extra-biblical sources such as the Book of Enoch and Greek poets etc (eg, Acts 17:28)
* Also included are various extra-biblical ancient sources that quote from the New Testament
* An extensive appendix adds much more material about the above and even provides the quotes from some of these extra-biblical sources

My only criticism of the translation is its rendering of the Greek word, "monogenes" (literally, only type, or unique). This Greek word occurs 9 times in the original text (John 1:14, 18, 3:16, 18 1 John 4:9, Heb 11:17, Luke 7:12, 8:42, 9:38). Those in the writings of John all refer to Jesus, the Hebrew reference is to Isaac and those in Luke refer to a human. The Comprehensive New Testament translates this word inconsistently by repeating the problem created in Jerome's Latin Vulgate (~400 AD) by translating the first 6 listed here as "ungenitus" (= only begotten in John and Heb) and the last 3 in the list above as "unicus" (= unique in Luke). Heb 11:17 describes Isaac this way, but who was neither first nor only son of Abraham; however, as a progenitor of Christ, he was unique among Abraham's many children. (The KJV perpetuated this problem as well.) However, most Bible students are well aware of this problem in some versions.

In short - this work is invaluable for any student of the New Testament to better understand its history, context and linguistic context.
The book itself is well bound and lies flat. My only suggestion for improvement would be to use a slightly heavier paper, but this is minor.
Highly recommended!

More accurate than the NAS, more readable than the NIV
By Shirah
I know it sounds like an advertisement, but I'm not kidding. The Comprehensive New Testament contains about 15,000 textual references mapping source texts with 20 target translations -- having more footnotes for all 20 translations than those translations have about themselves. If you've ever wondered why someone's translation read differently, now you'll know. But the notes are tied to the verse numbers, so there is no clutter in the text at all. The text itself is at a sixth grade reading level, and yet just as elegant and accurate as either the RSV or the NAS. If you already have a favorite translation, you'll find out more about your own translation than you've ever been able to before. The second half of the book gives cross references to practically everything from the ancient world: Philo, Josephus, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Greek literature (Paul quotes two different halves of the same Greek literary verse on Mars Hill and in the Letter to Titus -- something you would need multiple commentaries to know otherwise). I cannot imagine a Bible Study group or a church being the same again after this book, because it will answer all those questions of "but my Bible is different here." I can see the leader saying, "Well, George, your NIV is following a Byzantine reading here and Mary's RSV is following an Alexandrian reading." Five Stars -- an enthusiastic Five Stars.
