A haunting examination of groupthink and mass hysteria in a rural community, presented here with enlightening criticism and commentary

"I believe that the reader will discover here the essential nature of one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history," Arthur Miller wrote in an introduction to The Crucible, his classic play about the witch-hunts and trials in seventeenth-century Salem, Massachusetts. Based on historical people and real events, Miller's drama is a searing portrait of a community engulfed by hysteria.

In the rigid theocracy of Salem, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town's most basic fears and suspicions; and when a young girl accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch, self-righteous church leaders and townspeople insist that Elizabeth be brought to trial. The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminate the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence.

Written in 1953, The Crucible is a mirror Miller uses to reflect the anti-communist hysteria inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy's "witch-hunts" in the United States. Within the text itself, Miller contemplates the parallels, writing: "Political opposition...is given an inhumane overlay, which then justifies the abrogation of all normally applied customs of civilized behavior. A political policy is equated with moral right, and opposition to it with diabolical malevolence."
This Viking Critical Library edition of Arthur Miller's dramatic recreation of the Salem witch trials contains the complete text of The Crucible as well as extensive critical and contextual material about the play and the playwright, including:

  • Selections from Miller's writings on his most frequently performed play
  • Essays on the historical background of The Crucible, including personal narratives by participants in the trials and records of witchcraft in Salem from the original documents
  • Reviews of The Crucible, in production by Brooks Atkinson, Walter Kerr, Eric Bentley, and others
  • Excerpts from Jean-Paul Sartre's Les Sorcires de Salem, a "spin-off" of Miller's play, and three analogous works by Twain, Shaw, and Budd Schulberg
  • Critical essays on the play, on Miller, and on the play in the context of Miller's oeuvre
  • An introduction by the editor, a chronology, a list of topics for discussion and papers prepared by Malcolm Cowley, and a bibliography

A Moving and Brilliant Play
By M. A Netzley
The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities
By RCM
As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording
By Amazon Customer
I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).

Lucifer's Daughter (Princess of Hell Book 1), by Eve Langlais

It drives my dad nuts I’m such a goody two shoes, but the fact that I’m a virgin makes smoke pour from his ears. See, I’m determined to save myself for love, but daddy dear, more commonly known as Lucifer, just wants me to stop being an embarrassment. Would it kill you to sin a little?

Maybe he’ll get his wish because I met an intriguing hunk last night in my bar. Could he be the one? He certainly melts my panties like marshmallows over the coals of Hell, but do I dare trust him? My last boyfriend thought he’d gain infamy by killing me. He’s infamous all right. Dad had him mounted on a wall, his version of modern art titled, ‘Touch my baby girl and die’. Cute in a twisted way.

My love life isn’t the only thing I've got to worry about. There’s someone threatening the denizens of Hell, and while my daddy says to not worry my pretty little head about it, I an involved because whoever is behind the attacks keeps coming after me.

Bring it. I’m not afraid. Being a princess of Hell means that sometimes I have to grab a demon by the horns and slap it around. It’s what keeps my ass looking great.

Nothing in my life is ever simple, and I blame that on my dad, Lucifer. Assassination attempts, hellhounds, and a rebellion in Hell? A piece of cake compared to the turmoil in my heart. No one ever told me love would be the toughest battle of all.

Sexy fun
By Barks Book Nonsense
Muriel, virgin daughter of Satan, has been saving herself for love with the perfect man while making her dad the laughingstock of hell. His incessant nagging gets on her nerves but it's not easy finding the right guy. He can't be 100% mortal or she'd likely crush him in the heat of the heat of the moment, he has to be super-hot and honestly not any old guy will accept Satan as a future father-in-law. She resigns herself to a future of longing and nagging.

Muriel no longer lives under Satan's thumb but in a realm populated by humans and supernaturals that is very much like the mortal realm only with things like the "Damned" network and Survivor: Burn In Hell. Sounds like a fun place to me! She owns a bar that is popular with the supernatural beasties because she is a "null" which makes the 100' surrounding her a magic-free zone. One night, soon after another nagging visit from Satan, a hunk named Auric and his two gorgeous pals show up. She assumes Satan is testing her. But instead of wooing her, Auric is almost gruff as he demands to meet the owner of the bar. She refuses to answer him honestly, hell she's been dodging assassins most of her life, but something about him fuels her lust as no other man has done. He's hiding things as well but their connection is something neither can resist for long and once he kisses her he may just lose her virginity after all.

Though this story doesn't hold any major surprises, especially when Auric's secret is revealed, it was cute and pure sexy fun and so very easy to read. Muriel is funny and sarcastic and even though a virgin by choice, is not a prude. She can take care of herself but Auric, big He-man protector hasn't a clue and assumes she's a helpless little female. When he attempts to "save" her from a hellhound, not knowing she's a daughter of Satan this fun exchange happens:

My heart fluttered. He'd called me pretty. He'd wanted to protect me. How cute-but so unnecessary.

"I appreciate the thought behind it, but really, I can take care of myself."
"Even against hellhounds?" he said skeptically.
"Piece of cake," I boasted. That wasn't, technically, giving anything away. Lots of special folk could take care of hellhounds.
"Just who and what are you?" asked Auric. His questions were getting repetitive. I rolled my eyes. "I told you, my name is Muriel."
Auric crossed his arms over his chest-did I mention he had a really broad chest?-and gave me a stern look. Oh, please, once Satan gave you `the look,' all other looks paled in comparison. I just glared right back at him `til he sighed with exasperation-another sound I was familiar with.

This story wraps everything up in a satisfying way but it could have been another 300 pages and I bet I would've enjoyed reading more because I loved the writing style so much. There aren't a lot of writers I've found who can balance such strong sexual tension with a fun paranormal plot without their characters coming across as obnoxious or silly. This author succeeds for me and if these snippets make you grin you may want to check it out too.

Satan is hilarious as a frustrated daddy.

"I don't know why, but I'm attached to you, too," Satan said grumpily, hugging me back. I cherished moments like that; they tended to be few and far between. "Try to be bad," he said, before popping out of sight."

And Muriel's sense of humor just completely won me over

"Rolling my eyes, I again had to question why men had to be so stubborn. "Seriously, Auric, you do not want to mess with this thing."
"I've dealt with demons before," he said, pulling out a sword from behind his kitchen counter. I had to admit being impressed-his sword was long, shiny, and hard. Wait, that didn't sound right. Needless to say, he had a big one; and judging by the way he moved it, he also knew how to use it. Damn, I was even hornier than before. But right after I finished admiring his sword, I clued in to what he'd said. "What do you mean, you've dealt with demons before?"

A paranormal romance that is hot and funny
By DarkBloodyVamp
I was very intrigued to read this book and did not know what to expect when I got and I have to say I was happily surprised. I did not expect this book to have so much humour since it was about Satan and his daughter. This book not only had some very hot and steamy scenes but some laughing out loud moments that I actually had to suppress my laughter one day as I was reading the book on the train on my way to work.

As the title states this book is about Satan's daughter but she is far different than you would have expected. For one she is a a good girl and despite being Satan's daughter and having the ability to use her powers to command others she lives a pretty normal existence. That is until 3 gorgeous looking hunks walk into her bar and one of the captures her heart.

Auric is tough and powerful and has an aura of self-confidence but Muriel doesn't know what he is and he isn't about to mention it. What happens next are passions are unleashed between the two but unfortunately factors stand in the way towards there happiness, namely Muriel's father, someone trying to kill Muriel and Auric's past. The story was fast paced and had enough action both under the sheets and above to keep the reader's attention and intrigued.

What happens in the end will have the reader wanting more and to know what is going to happen next not only between Muriel and Auric but within the depths of Hell. Lucifer's Daughter

Beginning with the architect who draws the plans, readers meet the surveyors, equipment operators, carpenters, plumbers, and other people who produce a building. The book concludes with a family moving in, ready to make the house a home. Although children in some parts of the country will not relate specifically to houses with basements or septic systems, How a House Is Built provides basic, general information without oversimplifying. The illustrations are typical of Gibbons' style: bright colors, clean lines, and captions where necessary to define unfamiliar terms. Women are well represented in many non-traditional roles but not much racial diversity is shown. An appended page encourages comparison of modern frame houses to simple houses of the past. Building a House (Greenwillow, 1981) by Byron Barton offers less detailed information for younger children. --Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Pub . Lib . , TX

Very good
By Kathleen
Very good explanation and extremely detailed drawings of a construction project and the intricacies of building, each page featuring a close up of a portion of the project and work vehicles. It is similar to a Where's Waldo format from years ago (I am the Grammy now) and our 2.5 year old grandson enjoys showing me a "funny part" like a banana peel dropped in the road, a worker tripping over paint bucket, or one who is dangling precariously while working. Adaptable to reading for a young boy who loves all things construction as well as a 6 year old who grasps advanced concepts.

The Ninth Life of Louis Drax, by Liz Jensen

Nine-year-old Louis Drax is a problem child: bright, precocious, deceitful, and dangerously accident-prone. When he falls off a cliff during a picnic, the accident seems almost predestined.

Louis miraculously survives--but the family has been shattered. Louis' father has vanished, his mother is in shock, and Louis lies in a deep coma from which he may never emerge.

In a renowned coma clinic, a specialist tries to coax Louis back to consciousness. But the boy defies medical logic, startling the doctor out of his safe preconceptions, and drawing him inexorably into the dark heart of Louis' buried world. Only Louis holds the key to the mystery surrounding his fall--and he can't communicate. Or can he?

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Louis Drax isn't like other children. The morbidly imaginative and sharply intuitive boy from a provincial city in France has survived eight suspicious accidents, one for each year of his life. On his ninth birthday, Louis suffers a mysterious fall from a cliff and ends up in Dr. Pascal Dannachet's experimental coma clinic, where the truth of his most recent mishap will be revealed. So begins British novelist Jensen's fourth book (War Crimes for the Home, etc.), a fiercely intelligent psychological thriller told from the alternating perspectives of the comatose Louis and the professionally conflicted Dr. Dannachet. As the French police search for Pierre Drax, the prime suspect in his son's fall, Louis negotiates the unconscious world with Gustave, his grotesque, bandaged imaginary companion, and Dr. Dannachet reluctantly falls in love with Louis's mother, Natalie. Behind the many twists and turns that ensue is a multilayered, genuinely convincing emotional drama that adds substance to the suspense. Families are torn apart, scientists are confounded by the miraculous, and the human heart unleashes its many secrets. Jensen's gift for black humor and off-kilter narratives shines throughout this page-turner, and her understanding of fractured psyches and their ability to heal is remarkable. The idiosyncrasies of her peculiar characters only make them more engaging, and at the end of Jensen's gripping tale, the reader is left eager for more.

From Booklist
Here is the breakout novel--a literary thriller that's almost impossible to put down--for British writer Jensen (Egg Dancing, 1996).It has already been optioned by Miramax, with Anthony Minghella (Cold Mountain) set to direct. It is narrated both by nine-year-old Louis Drax, who is in a coma in a clinic in Provence, and by his doctor, Pascal Dannachet. According to Louis' mother, Natalie, Louis was thrown off a cliff by his angry father, who has subsequently disappeared. As Dannachet, who has grown increasingly estranged from his wife, probes the Draxes' family history, he is soon smitten by emotionally needy and vulnerable Natalie, although certain elements of her story don't seem to add up. Louis' distinctive narrative voice is instantly gripping; referring to himself as the Disturbed Child, he relays in a grimly funny, precocious voice the many accidents he has suffered in his short, unhappy life. Because Louis' narration is so singular, Dannachet's suffers by comparison. This is sure to remind readers of Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time [BKL Ap 1 03]. Failed to hold my attention. Unrealistic and melodramatic.
By Craig
This books begins when 8-year old Louis Drax is brought to a hospital in a deep coma, after previously being misdiagnosed as dead. His doctor tries to unravel the mysteries surrounding Louis’ life and the murder attempt that nearly killed him. The narrative alternates between the doctor’s point of view and the boy’s.

This was first time reading Liz Jenson, an author whom I have heard good things about, but this book failed repeatedly to hold my attention.

The Louis chapters were frustrating because they combined too many confusing elements: the dream-state of an imagined coma landscape, the half-understood impressions a child has of adult interactions, and the lies and half-truths the boy believes.

The doctor chapters were even more frustrating. The central mystery of Louis’ accident was fairly obvious (my wife and I both figured it out in the second chapter!), so the narrator seemed dull and slow. Every time he was close to learning the truth, he would get distracted--an interruption by an employee, a medical emergency, the apparently uncontrollable desire to have inappropriate sex with Louis' mom. On this last topic, his lack of professional ethics was unrealistic. While doctors may occasionally fall in love with their patient’s beautiful mothers, few would do so on their first meeting—especially not when they have already been warned twice she could be a murder suspect.

The ending was laughably melodramatic—a chase through a forest fire.

The supernatural elements of the story were too readily accepted by all the characters who should have been skeptical—the doctors, the nurses, and the police.

Quirky, but hard to put down.
By Kathy Walunas
This is not my usual kind of book, but I saw a movie trailer and was intrigued. I didn't love the way it was written but there were parts of the story that grabbed me and forced me to keep reading. It's an interesting premise, but not believable. This story is a combination of science fiction and psychological thriller.

By Jamie Jackson
I thought the story was a little slow at first and somewhat confusing because the storyline jumps between characters. I figured out the plot of the story fairly early into the story. Once I got past the beginning I found the story to be interesting and entertaining. I am anxious to see the movie now.

Review
The Comprehensive New Testament is a careful but readable modern translation of the New Testament and an outstanding ancient bibliography. It is also an accessible introduction to textual criticism for the non-specialist. While it providentially supplies a de facto parallel Bible...The Comprehensive New Testament goes an extra step by also placing ancient sources in the hands of readers. --Review of Biblical Literature 2009 by the Society of Biblical Literature

Five stars out of Five! In the words of the editors, from their preface, in presenting another translation to an already voluminous field, their effort has been to translate the right words and not words created by scribal mistakes or editorial changes. This is a worthwhile effort and should prove to be a meaningful reference. --Joyce Rice, ForeWord CLARION Reviews

A unique, new translation...represents an enormous amount of valuable research...this translation does read well and is no doubt accurate. And the footnotes are scholarly, indeed. --Bible Editions & Versions, Volume 11 April June 2010 No. 2, Journal of The International Society of Bible Collectors

Comprehensive but not complicated
By S. Utts
As I opened the package containing TCNT I was delighted to see how lightweight but sturdy the volume is, but when I opened it to the preface I was delighted because from the start this translation has helps that I have not found in other Bibles. In the preface there is an easy-to-use explanation of the footnotes that the reader will find on every page of TCNT, and a concise explanation of works such as the Apostolic and Patristic Writings, Dead Sea Scrolls, Epic of Gilgamesh, Rabbinic Writings, Tacitus, etc. Those who are new to the Bible are not likely to have heard of some of these before, but for those like myself who have studied the Bible for years, most have not had the time to go to a library and dig for that type of information. It is provided here in the preface.

Another thing I found wonderful is the paragraph in "FInal Notes" honoring the editor's grandparents for the faithful way they served G-d. So often we go through life hoping that the way we raise our children will result in their becoming people of faith when they are old enough to choose. This paragraph will encourage the reader that faith does not develop in a vacuum and that parents and grandparents who faithfully introduce children to the Bible will indeed be planting the seeds from which the faith of these children will grow.

As to the translation itself, the type is easy to read, even for a person like me who was dealing with vision problems. This translation is very easy to read and understand, so even people new to the Bible will be able to grasp the concepts as the NT authors lay them out. The footnotes are ample, easy to understand, and if people are already advanced in Bible study, they can use the footnotes as a springboard for more study at their own pace.

At the end of the text of the TCNT, the editors have made an extensive section as a "Cross Reference Index" for each book of TCNT. This goes verse-by-verse and even has bolded sections outlined in black of explanations that explain portions of the Scripture that might be puzzling to a new reader.

I highly recommend TCNT! This is the first NT translation I have found that is easy enough for seekers yet offers challenges for those who are proficient in Bible study. It would be great for students and can be carried easily in a backpack to Sunday School. It is reasonably priced so that each child in a family can have his/her own copy.

Long Overdue
By Peter McGowan
For all its self-proclaimed excellence about an accurate translation, my judgement is that is very good - just as good as the big four: NIV, NASB, ESV and NRSV. The English in the latter four is far more polished. However, this is not the main purpose and value of this invaluable book - it is the extensive cross reference system which consists of the following in foot-notes on each page:
* Variations in the underlying Greek text between the NA vs Alexandrian vs Byzantine vs Majority text, vs etc
* Variations in the some of the major English translations and the Greek text they have assumed
* Alternate translations when Hebrew or Aramaic idiom is used
* Sources of Quotes or illusions from the Old Testament, where they exist
* Sources of quotes or strong illusions from extra-biblical sources such as the Book of Enoch and Greek poets etc (eg, Acts 17:28)
* Also included are various extra-biblical ancient sources that quote from the New Testament
* An extensive appendix adds much more material about the above and even provides the quotes from some of these extra-biblical sources

My only criticism of the translation is its rendering of the Greek word, "monogenes" (literally, only type, or unique). This Greek word occurs 9 times in the original text (John 1:14, 18, 3:16, 18 1 John 4:9, Heb 11:17, Luke 7:12, 8:42, 9:38). Those in the writings of John all refer to Jesus, the Hebrew reference is to Isaac and those in Luke refer to a human. The Comprehensive New Testament translates this word inconsistently by repeating the problem created in Jerome's Latin Vulgate (~400 AD) by translating the first 6 listed here as "ungenitus" (= only begotten in John and Heb) and the last 3 in the list above as "unicus" (= unique in Luke). Heb 11:17 describes Isaac this way, but who was neither first nor only son of Abraham; however, as a progenitor of Christ, he was unique among Abraham's many children. (The KJV perpetuated this problem as well.) However, most Bible students are well aware of this problem in some versions.

In short - this work is invaluable for any student of the New Testament to better understand its history, context and linguistic context.
The book itself is well bound and lies flat. My only suggestion for improvement would be to use a slightly heavier paper, but this is minor.
Highly recommended!

More accurate than the NAS, more readable than the NIV
By Shirah
I know it sounds like an advertisement, but I'm not kidding. The Comprehensive New Testament contains about 15,000 textual references mapping source texts with 20 target translations -- having more footnotes for all 20 translations than those translations have about themselves. If you've ever wondered why someone's translation read differently, now you'll know. But the notes are tied to the verse numbers, so there is no clutter in the text at all. The text itself is at a sixth grade reading level, and yet just as elegant and accurate as either the RSV or the NAS. If you already have a favorite translation, you'll find out more about your own translation than you've ever been able to before. The second half of the book gives cross references to practically everything from the ancient world: Philo, Josephus, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Greek literature (Paul quotes two different halves of the same Greek literary verse on Mars Hill and in the Letter to Titus -- something you would need multiple commentaries to know otherwise). I cannot imagine a Bible Study group or a church being the same again after this book, because it will answer all those questions of "but my Bible is different here." I can see the leader saying, "Well, George, your NIV is following a Byzantine reading here and Mary's RSV is following an Alexandrian reading." Five Stars -- an enthusiastic Five Stars.
