Richard Hooker... SURE he wrote it.

After "MASH" & "MASH Goes to Maine," Richard Hooker "took on a collaborator", William E. Butterworth, for a series of "MASH Goes to..." books.
The first two MASH books are basically collections of short stories with a very loose structure. The Butterworth books are sitcom novels... and not very good ones.
After the Butterworth series was played out, Hooker released "MASH Mania," which was a loosely structured series of short stories about the Swampmen in middle-age -- a rock-ribbed Republican middle-age, in fact, amazing though that may be to fans of the TV series, which Hooker hated. Although this book has politics opposite to my own, it's still funny and more importantly, Hooker WROTE IT.
From the completely different writing styles involved, I'd say that if Hooker ever even SAW what Butterworth wrote, it was to say, "Yeah, ok. I'll approve that."
I like Hooker's writing; so I felt rather manipulated by the Butterworth MASH books, which to my mind are Hooker's in name only.

Classic that never goes out of style

My professor chose this book to use in an Optimal Control class partly because it is very affordable. On top of that, its contents are superb, giving very clear explanations of the fundamental principles underlying Optimal Control for nonlinear/linear systems.

Despite its long history, I would think that all material are still relevant, although there are available more "modern" numerical techniques (nonetheless, it's still always good to know how things were done "back in those days"). I would grade this as a must-have for the beginning student in Optimal Control. I have always been a fan of Dover books, publishing quality books at rock bottom prices. This one has just reinforced my liking of Dover Publishing.

Practical Excellent Introduction

It is an excellent "first book" which is very easy to read and covers broad range of topics: Dynamic Programming leading to Hamilton-Jacobi using Bellman's principle, Calculus of Variations, Hamiltonian Equations, Pontryagin's principle and finally numerical solutions (two point boundary value problems based and using direct methods from operations research methods).

I used this book for graduate course about Optimal control. It is written in very good style, friendly for everyone who is new to the topic. Optimal control theory seems very difficult in the first view, but this book can help doing the first steps.
The book starts with explaining why optimal control theory is important. Then it builds static optimizing theory. After these simpler parts are clearly explained, the calculus of variations and the dynamic optimization is introduced. The last part is numerical techniques for finding optimal control.
In my opinion this book explains, for example, the deriving of Riccati equation in the best way I have ever read. I can say that I finally understand where Riccati equation comes from. :)
Every section of the book is supported with several examples that help understanding the theory.
I recommend this book for everyone who wants to understand the optimal control theory fundamentals. It is especially suitable for those who are new to the topic.

A great read!

I've been reading Gail Blanke's Monday Morning Motivator for years, and this collection is the best of the best. Always pithy, often hilarious, and generally both wise and inspiring, the MMMs are, at the very least, a great read. They can truly get you up and moving on that dark day we face every damned week.

Better Than The First Cup Of Coffee

Gail Blanke is one of the most positive influences in my life. I have had the privilege of being a client of Gail's and therefore have had in-person 'Monday Morning Motivating'. I can say these nuggets of thoughtfulness are better than the first cup of coffee on a Monday morning. The perspectives presented take the simplest things like a walk in the park or a good meal and make them the most important 'go-to' place in your memory. Then in the next turn the perspective enables you to see the most complex situations such as a political campaign or a difficult work or family situation and break them down to a stepping stone to something even better. I have shared Gail’s thoughts with global audiences and they resonate with everyone. The very simple fact is people want to envision how good things could be and Gail helps us get the vision and then execute the steps to make the vision a reality.

thinking (naively) that with a great of determination

Monday mornings are usually a time of feverish activity. A new beginning to tackle everything that had not gotten done the week before. I usually load on more and more to do's, thinking (naively) that with a great of determination, focus and control....this week, FINALLY, it will ALL get done. But then I open my email and always zero in on the Monday Morning Motivator, and I get a little jolt of perspective and a sense of priority. Gail makes me think, stop and look at my world with gratitude, balance and perspective. There is usually a little ah-ha moment and a recognition of how to approach the week that gives me the motivation to remember what is important and incorporate it into the day. I print them out and cram them in pockets and purses for review later.
I am so glad that I will have a place to find some favorites in Gail's new book!!

Excellent Book on Waste Management...Don't Be Scared By The Book's Size!

This is a really good book that I had to purchase for my graduate level Haz. and Waste Management class. Each chapter provides detailed info, covering everything from solidification and stabilization to proper waste management protocols and corrective action procedures for disposing of waste. You'll also find info about biological and chemical reactions, as well as land disposal and recycling. In other words, it covers the gamut.

Initially, I thought that the book would be boring, but I really learned a great deal from it. We had to do select homework problems from each chapter (some of which our teacher required a lot of detailed answers for), which weren't that bad. The only problem that I had was a lack of any kind of hint for the questions at the end of the chapter. Most of the answers you can find by reading certain chapters, but if you are unsure of where to find that info, you're out of luck if your teacher doesn't correct your papers. Overall, this book comes highly recommended for learning the finer details of waste management!

good for hazardous waste engineering and more!

well, my course teacher wanted us to buy this one. so had to buy, no choice. but i dont regret to buy after i finish the course! its wonderful book from cover to cover, and i'll keep it for my future use as an environmental engineer. one thing i didn't like as a student is its exercise problems mostly contained theories, not mathematical problems. so needed to read thoroughly, though its not well organized book. you need to read whole chapter to find the answer, no guess! it covered a lot of materials for environmental engineers. so its a book to keep forever.

Basic concepts fine, but sloppy inconsistent units with dozens of mistakes

Not overly impressed with the text. It uses many outdated concepts, shows very poor unit cancellations, and is riddled with dozens of major mistakes in example problems. The basic concepts are fine, but other than that this book is a pain to use.
