It was as if I were there on the road from Austria to Jerusalem…

…but, of course I was not; I was somewhere comfortable in my home. The author walks you through the experience of pilgrimage along with the history of ancient lands, ruins and roadways. It is a 4,500 km (2,800 miles) walk that NEVER becomes monotonous. Each time I picked up the book it was with excitement as I wondered what new accounts Johannes, Otto and David would experience. I was captivated by the biblical, mythical and historical details intertwined with their lives as pilgrims. The book is laced with what seems to be hundreds of photos that adds relevance and enjoyment to the book and journey.

For anyone who wants to know what it means to be a walking pilgrim; a dedicated life of day-to-day uncertainty, but filled with the hope and faith as one travels through unknown lands…this is an enthralling read.

I congratulate them on the success of their journey, and the journey they continue to share as they help to build the Jerusalem Way (an International Peace Project); a road for future pilgrims to travel. It is a journey I hope to make one day, but by bicycle.

As I am preparing a PhD application focused on Animated documentary, this book has become essential reading. Well written and researched it is providing the backbone of my research and practice. I am still reading but thus far Bella's book has given an excellent history plus clear and concise outlines of representation and function.

Epic, fascinating and riveting

As second books in a trilogy go, I normally consider them to be the least interesting, because they're carrying on from the excitement of beginning a new series and leading into the conflicts of the third book. Not so with Exile. The characters and situations set up in the first book are followed through with no decrease in tension, and the final pages involve a twist that made me cry out on a crowded train. It was excruciating to wait the two weeks between this book and the next, but since all of the books are available now, what are you waiting for? :)

Wow! I read the series in succession and I was breathless the entire ride. I could not put them down. I love the characters Sorne and Imoshen. Very well developed story and characters. My only criticism would be Ms Daniells has not written more books in The Outcast Chronicles!

Solid Theology Peter's Style

The reason I picked Prof. Grudem's commentary instead of others is because he is known for a careful in-depth study of Scripture with the ability to explain it clearly. This is not to say that other commentaries are not as good, but since I was so edified by his systematic theology text, I thought I would study his commentary on 1 Peter as well. Petrine and Pauline epistles are similar in that they usually start with doctrines followed by applied theology. The message Peter conveys as he begins the letter with the great doctrine of salvation is what a right living should look like as a result of a right soteriology. In other words, soteriology not only has to do with the salvation of soul in the world to come, but it transforms the believers' present life and their worldviews; in their relationship with God, morality, relationships with their fellow Christians, civil authorities and at workplaces (chapters 1-2,4). The reality of salvation should also be demonstrated in marriage, love and services in the church (chapters 3-5).

A term that doesn't show up often in the NT that Peter uses twice is parepidemos (1:1 and 2:11) that Grudem does a nice analysis on (p.52-53). He doesn't like the use of "exile" as an English equivalent of the word since it conveys someone who is forcefully removed from his or her homeland, which is not what Peter means. I agree with the assessment that the right translation is either "sojourner" or "those who reside as aliens or temporary residence away from one's homeland" in a spiritual, not physical sense that the true believers' homeland is heaven. Grudem points to Phil 3:20 as reference to compare this passage with, but I argue Heb 11:13-16 is a better parallel since the context is closer to that of 1 Peter and the same word parepidemos is also used there. In fact, the parallel with the Hebrews passage that talks about Abraham and the OT saints considering themselves as pilgrims provides a more compelling argument that Peter desires his readers to have the same mindset and lifestyle as well.

The theme of suffering seems to be dominant in 1 Peter considering the context in which it was written; namely during Nero's reign of terror (p.37). Not only does Peter remind the readers that simultaneous grief and joy are normal in the Christian life (p.68), but there is a divine design in it to test and solidify the faith of God's people and that God "commends with special honor those who trusted him in hardship even though they could not see the reason for it; they trusted him simply because he was their God and they knew him to be worthy of trust. It is in times when the reason for hardship cannot be seen that trust in God alone seems to be most pure and precious in his sight" (p.70). As a further encouragement, Peter gives an eminent example of Jesus that continues in "perfect obedience to God in the face of the most difficult opposition and hardship" (2:21-25, p. 137). Perhaps it is useful to quote Heb 12:3 when discussing these verses due to a close parallel to what the writer has in mind as well.

The best section of the commentary when it comes to a brilliant exegesis is when Grudem deals with the difficult passage in chapter 3:19-20 since I have had a hard time understanding it. The questions that naturally come out are (1) who are the spirits in prison? (2)what did Christ preach? and (3)when did he preach? (p. 165-170) that he elaborates further in the appendix with references to dominant themes in Jewish literature. Not only does Grudem provide a right exegesis to answer these questions, but more importantly he also lists the implication to believers and the church throughout the ages (p.168). I am not going to discuss the details here but encourage the readers to read and study them for themselves.

What I take home from studying Grudem's commentary is as follows. It is technical but it is not boring or difficult for most laypeople. He brings up plenty of Greek words and the references where they are used in some other literatures, but he does so in an engaging manner. The purpose of orthodox theology is orthopraxy and ultimately doxology. I believe this is the principle with which we should always use when reading the Scripture which is Grudem's principle as well. This is where he does best that makes this commentary so enjoyable.

Exemplary Mid Length Commentary

Purpose: The purpose of this commentary, as is the purpose of all in the Tyndale set is to provide a medium length commentary aimed at the lay reader or pastor. It should not be too technical for the lay person or too brief to prove useful to the pastor. Discussion on matters of grammar and original language and interaction with other scholars should be limited. Wayne Grudem did a good job of meeting these goals. His commentary is a little on the scholarly side for the Tyndale series but certainly is readable for the average church attendee.

Things I liked:
1. In a relatively short space Grudem lays out an excellent introduction to the letter. In particular, he clearly and thoroughly lays out the case for Petrine authorship and a date prior to heavy persecution. I found his arguments against the letter being pseudopigraphic quite persuasive.

2. Grudem interprets the text in a very clear headed fashion. Consistently I found myself in agreement with what he said. He wades through the text and always seems to pick the common sense interpretation of the passage. Unlike some commentators, you will never find yourself asking, "where did that come from?" He sticks to the text and rarely reads too much into it. His reasoning behind his interpretations is explained when necessary and he also notes when he disagrees with notable scholarship. Also, much like his Systematic Theology, he displays his ability to pack a lot into a small space. He says much more in 239 pages than some commentators would in twice that length.

3. His appendix on 1 Peter 3:19, 20 is a masterpiece. It may be Grudem at his best. He spends 37 pages on those two verses thoroughly defending his interpretation on a highly controversial passage. Whether you come to agree with him or not, his argument is so evenhanded and well presented that it is worth buying the commentary for the appendix alone. One note though, the appendix is quite technical and some knowledge of the original language is necessary to fully benefit from it. There is a shortened, less technical version in the commentary proper.

Criticisms:
1. Eerdmans is a terrible publisher. As is typical with their books, the typeset is low quality. While it is always readable, in spots it is a little distracting. However, given the low price of the commentary you cannot complain too much.

Overall I give the commentary five stars because it does an excellent job of fulfilling its purpose. A pastor or well studied layperson probably should get an additional commentary like Schreiner or Michaels.

Exegetically Valuable

Wayne Grudem's work on I Peter gives helpful insight into the words and flow of thought of the letter. He handles the difficult passages with clear explanation and fair support of various views of meaning. It has been very helpful as I've taught through the letter. The only note of attention is he leans toward teaching that Peter viewed the church as Israel in this age in a few places where I believe the passage does not hint at this idea. He is not pushy with this theological view and it is not at all a distraction from the clear word studies and wonderful insights he provides in the commentary. I recommend this work for any serious teacher of God's Word.

Moominpapa writes his memoirs recalling his childhood. He escapes from an orphanage and falls in with three friends who sail away on the Oshun Oxtra to have some fantastic adventures. Moominpapa writes about saving Moominmamma from drowning and there's a happy ending where we find all Moominpapa's friends are the fathers of Moomintrolls playmates. This book seems to be the same as Moominpapa's Memoirs.

Tove Jansson, The Exploits of Moominpappa, As Related by Himself (Ernest Benn, 1952)

The third Moomin book is, as its title advertises, the exploits of Moominpappa (it's also been released as Moominpappa's Memoirs, by the by). The frame here is that Moominpappa is reading them to Moomintroll, Sniff, and Snufkin (and the parents of those two feature prominently--which is rather odd, considering that Snufkin seems to have had nothing more than a chance meeting with Moomintroll and Sniff in Comet in Moominland, but who's counting?), who are listening with wide-eyed awe. And of course, we all know that it's all just tall tales--or is it?

Ah, wonderful Moomins, how we still adore thee after all these years. If it's been a while--or, heavens forbid, if you didn't read the series as a kid--what are you waiting for? These are great, and you'll love them as much now as you did, or would have, as a little Moomintroll. *** �

Tell me this lovely children's novel isn't out of print! If so, you must seek it out at your public library. All of Jansson's "Moomin" books are wonderful, and this one is too. Moominpappa, a round little pudgy creature, writes down the memoirs of his youth - how he was born under a lucky star, how he escaped from an orphanage, and how he met his friends and fellow oddball creatures: Hodgkins, a practical, mechanical genius; the Muddler, a worried collector of bric-a-brac; the Joxter, a lazy fellow with a no-nonsense philosophy; the Mymble's daughter, a mischievous but merry girl; and Edward the Booble, a giant something-or-other who keeps popping up when least expected. The cast of curious characters goes on in this delightful tale of a fantastic world that is also gentle and funny in a very offbeat way. Moominpappa's meandering adventures are interrupted now and again as we cut back to the present time, where the next generation listen with rapt attention to the heroic tale of its author. Sweet, subtle fun for kids around grade 4.

A Brilliant Textbook That Ought to be More Readily Available!

I had been searching for this particular plasma physics text since taking a Ph.D. course in space plasma physics (with only a few library copies avaialable) in 1985 at the Univ. of Alaska- Fairbanks, because Nicholson's approach is so well adapted to the space physics domain. I finally managed to obtain it on amazon.com. meaning I no longer had to go to assorted libraries - which was good.

I felt it incumbent on myself to write a detailed review of the book, if I ever could get hold of it, and this is what I present here. (Knowing in advance some potential readers may not relish the level of detail, including the mathematical inclusions and hence not find it "useful" to them - which likely means to me they wouldn't have purchased it anyway and probably are better suited to getting a basic text like 'The Fourth State of Matter')

Nicholson begins with a rigorous attending to essential definitions, quantitatively given in Chapter 1. Then in Chapter 2 'Single Particle Motion' he sets into high gear, tackling E X B drifts (p. 17), Grad B drift (p. 20) along with gyro-motion and guiding center approximation (21-22) and curvature drifts (p. 22), then polarization drift and magnetic moments - finishing with the adiabatic invariants, ponderomotive force and diffusion.

The treatment of mirror machines and mirror confinement in the context of magnetic moment and the adiabatic invariants is also particularly applicable to the space physics arena.

For example, In space physics, one uses the sine of *the loss cone angle* to obtain the mirror ratio (where
B(min) , B (max) refer to minimum and maximum magnetic induction respectively). This requires minor adjustments to Nicholson's formalism, leading to:

sin(Θ_L) = � [ (B(min) / B (max)]^�

If one finds that there are particles within the "mirrors" for which the "pitch angle" (φ) has:

sin (φ) > [ (B(min) / B (max )]^�

then these will be reflected within the tube, On the other hand, those particles for which the "less than" condition applies will be lost, on transmission out of the mirror configuration.

Since the adiabatic invariant u for particle motion is a constant of the motion:

u= � [mv ^2 /B]

we have (with the v's the perpendicular and parallel components of velocity, i.e. relative to the B-field):

[v⊥^2 /B(max)] = [v ‖ ^ 2 /B_z] = const. or [v⊥^2 /v ‖ ^ 2 ] = B_z /B(max)

where we take B_z = B(min)

that is, the minimum of the magnetic field intensity, say occurring at the apex of a solar coronal loop.

Probably chapters 3 and 4 (Plasma Kinetic Theory 1 and II) will be the toughest bars to cross for most students, but again, Francis Chen's 'Introduction to Plasma Physics', is a good augmenting and support text. (See also my review of Chen's book).

The Vlasov equation (Chapter 6) is also critical material and most Ph.D. courses will include it in a first semester course. What the potential reader needs to bear in mind, of course, is that classification of differing fluid regimes is at the heart of most plasma physics and progresses via consideration of different 'moments'.

For example, consider the Boltmann eqn.: @f/ @t + v*grad f + F/m*@f/@t = (@f/@t)_C

(where @ denotes partial derivative, and (@f/@t)_C is the time rate of change in f due to collisions.)

The first moment, then yields a 'two-fluid' (e.g. electron-ion) medium, obtained by integrating the above eqn. with F = q/m (E + v X B). If one then assumes a sufficiently hot plasma so it's collisionless, the term on the RHS, (@f/@t)_C -> 0.

This is the Vlasov equation:

@f/@t + v*grad f + q/m (E + v X B)*@f/@t = 0

The 2nd moment is obtained by multiplying the original eqn. (Boltzmann) by mv then integrating it over dv.

Anyway, the progression by using this procedure is that one gets in succession:

This is basically the same progression followed in Nicholson, ending up (roughly) at Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in Chapter 8 (with two further chapters on discrete particle effects and weak turbulence theory to clear up finer details, e.g. to do with debye shielding.

I especially have always liked Nicholson's treatment of Landau damping (sec. 6.5, page 80) and the way it follows on from the treatment of the Landau contour.(p. 76)

the case below, for the upper right half-plane for plotting velocities u on the imaginary (vertical) and real (horizontal) axis.

For some Laplace transform function E1(w) one has:

E1(w) ~ INT du {(df/du) / [u - w/k])}

And at certain value of u (= w/k) what do we find? Well, w/k - w/k = 0 so

E1(w) -> oo

Of course, this is verboten! It is an infinity! A singularity! As you can see they don't merely arise with naked singularities!

To avoid this (E1(w) -> oo) in obtaining what we call the inverse transform, one then performs (as shown below with arrows) an "analytical continuation" process which escapes the singularity and arrives at a rational and reasonable solution.

This Landau contour - after the contour integral, wends its way around the singular pole (infinity) and going along the horizontal axis, then downwards (picking up what we call a "residue" (2 pi(i)) and then back up and further along to the right of real axis u(r).

Further note: When I took the Space Plasma Physics course, I was concurrently taking Mathematical Physics (Ph.D. level) with it. My suggestion is that perhaps students can get more out of Nicholson's text if they take the Mathematical physics as a prerequisite. Especially useful in this case, is greater exposure to the calculus of residues.

Nicholson's book belongs on the shelves of every serious graduate level plasma physics student, or space physics researcher - but as I noted- I just wished it was more widely available!
