You will believe in the glorious power of a culture that could build such wonderous tales of fancy, and you will laugh at the antics of heroes and mortals alike. You will smile and you may even cry, but what you will not do is put this book down, for it has no equal among its type.
Whether a student of the classics, a lover of myth, a worshipper of the ancient gods, or just someone looking for a wonderfull read, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Rape, Plunder, and Sordid Hi-jinks

"The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony," is a marvelous retelling of the Greek myths that puts a trace on their source, and a track on their permutations. More importantly Roberto Calasso explores their ramifications on modern times. And, he does it in a scholarly and entertaining way that never pulls us from the full world of ancient Greece that he recreates. Oh, those gods and goddesses were steeped in gore, and would wreck whatever havoc was necessary to have their ways with humanity and each other. The blood of every hero seems to begin with a sanctified seduction or rape, and end in a pool either before the gates of Troy, or as a result of that ten year war. Not to say that the humans act or fare any better than their divine counterparts. The greatest among them were small in their motives as they pursued homicide, parricide, matricide, infanticide and every other side of slaughter they could summon into being. But, as small as they were, they were heroes; and, as petty as they were, they were the gods; and their actions, reactions, and inactions shaped and continue to shape Western culture. "The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony" is a fitting companion piece to "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," and stands alone as a thrilling tale of the mortal and immortal excesses that have formed us.

A life-changing work of genius

Roberto Calasso's retelling of the myths of antiquity is as
powerful and life-changing a book as I've ever read. He
illuminates these stories and brings them to life, showing us
the power they held for the ancients by infusing them with
his own narrative power, writing in a style which is crisp,
modern, and yet full of fantasy. We see our own lives in the
lives of the gods and the lives of the humans with whom
they spoke, made love, made war.

This book would be worth reading simply for the engaging way
in which Calasso tells the stories. He doesn't stop there,
however. His insights and interpretations are worth a book in
themselves. Nearly every page of my copy is filled with
checks and underlined passages, each representing ideas which
provoked thought or simply struck me as brilliant. This book
is not another dictionary of myths in the style of Bullfinch
and Hamilton and Graves--it is a work of literature in its own
right, and, I believe, a work of genius.

If you are interested in classical mythology, read this book.
If you are not, read this book. It is for anyone who wants
to see the world in a different, richer way.

Must own for any XCOM fan into the process and art behind the game.

Amazing insight into the process and art of XCOM! I Collect video game art books and this is one of the best ive seen. This book contains many sketches and high resolution digital artwork images and gives info from the artist and devs on the thought process off design. As an added bonus this book is insanely cheap price for the high quality you get. I would highly recommend.

Playing it safe

The 192-page hardcover is split into several chapters and covers the previsualization, environments, aliens, ADVENT and XCOM.

In a world controlled by aliens, the new cities are now being designed with a rather sterile, clinical look, much to the vision of the aliens no doubt. Too much order, too clean. Luckily, there are still the shanty and small town environments to make things visually more interesting. It's quite a contrast when you compare the cities with abandoned towns with signs of life that have lived there. Design of the alien facilities look different too, and quite unexpectedly have more curves versus the blocky city style.

Character designs of the aliens and enemies are nice, detailed and come with sketches too. The Advent also look cool, stylish and futuristic. There are also vehicle designs, spacecrafts, troop transport, cars, and other props, e.g. weapons and interior designs.

Overall, the quality of the art is definitely top notch. However when it comes to the concepts, the ideas behind, I feel that the game studio is playing it too safe. The art feels so familiar, like I've seen them before. The art feels like they could come from Mass Effect. Yes, there are differences such as the ADVENT troopers and mechs being more sleek looking, but to me, the art direction quite similar to Mass Effect. That's just what I felt.

So yeah, it's still a good artbook but it could have been better if the game studios are more daring which unfortunately is not the case as nowadays it's all about making safe games that can make money.

Not as comprehensive as I would have liked. Some items (like enemies) only have half a page of concept art, while maps and scenery can take up entire pages. Just not "wowed" by it.

While this book is not necessarily an intro guide, it provides instructions on how to build and utilize many of the "special' effects that Premiere Elements is capable of. This is not a book for for a new user to learn Premiere Elements, but is best for someone who has some working knowledge of the program. This edition is full of images and color examples, and the author Steve Grisetti makes following the steps easy to follow. This is a must have reference to any basic Adobe Premiere Elements learning guide.

Good Buy, Easy Read and Informational

While looking for wig making books I read the two reviews and I am thinking that those reviewers didn't actually read this book. This book offers some of the same information the other wig making book I ordered for $50.00 offers. This book is written by a woman that makes her own wigs and hair pieces and offers good photos and instructions. I am not sure that I will use all of the techniques described in this book but if you are looking to make wigs with wefts of hair this is a good offering at a very low cost.

I am Ashamed to share an Industry with this Author.

I have never before seen such unprofessional wig work and poor editing as makes up "Wig Making Made Simple" by Mrs. Shon Stoker.

The wigmaking techniques present within have very little application for any serious wigmaking student, and even those techniques are described with such poor grammar as to give the impression that the author has never seen higher than an eighth-grade education in language arts. A segue into chatspeak would not seem out of place amongst the variety of misused tenses, "They're"'s, and overuse of exclamative phrasing.

The continued publishing of this book is a testament to the fact that ANYONE can call themselves a professional, by conforming to the basic definition of the word. Though one must ask, knowing that a "professional" is simply one who makes money on their work, whether it ought to count if that "professional work" would only ever be paid for by mistake.

This is a poorly written book. It is not informative,and the author seems like all she was doing is filling spaces. This disaster should not have been published in it's present state. Someone should of proof read it first.

About the Author
Dr. Mark Umbreit is a Professor and founding Director of the Center for Restorative Justice & Peacemaking in the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee. Dr. Umbreit is an internationally recognized researcher, practitioner and author, having trained thousands of individuals from more than forty countries. As a practitioner, Mark facilitates peacebuilding circles in the community and dialogues between family survivors of homicide and the offender.||Dr. Marilyn Peterson Armour is an Associate Professor and founding Director of the Institute for Restorative Justice and Restorative Dialogue in the School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin. Besides her noteworthy research and reputation as teacher and trainer, Dr. Armour has pioneered the use of restorative justice for a variety of social issues including offender re-entry and domestic violence. Dr. Armour is recognized for her outstanding work with family members of homicide victims.

Comprehensive

I've studied much about RJ and found this to be a very comprehensive book in terms of history, current trends, applications, and various models of facilitating restorative circles. From my experience, Dr. Umbreit is considered--if not the grand-daddy of restorative practices--then the daddy, in academic circles. Again, great overview/picture in one book. Worth the price if you want some understanding of the world of restorative justice/processes/practices/circles. Even as a student of RJ, he pulled it all together for me, and brought more clarity.
