English is often advertised as a social "good" with unquestioned instrumental value, yet access to quality English-medium education in low-income countries tends to be restricted to those with sufficient economic means to pay for it. As the capitalist world economy continues to change and grow, and assuming that translation technologies continue to improve, it is likely that the roles and relative importance of English as a global language will change significantly. Assessing the costs and benefits of acquiring English therefore takes on increased urgency. The book argues that a political economic approach is particularly appropriate in this endeavor, as it takes into account theories and empirical findings from a range of disciplines in order to assess and explain real-world phenomena that do not fit neatly into boxes labeled "economic," "social," "political" or "cultural."

Together, the chapters in this volume argue for a new direction in language policy studies-grounded in political economy -- that will explain why English has been experienced as both a blessing and curse in different parts of the world, why English continues to be useful as a lingua franca for particular sectors of the global economy, and why it is a detriment to economic development in many low-income countries. The book will be invaluable to language policy scholars, policy-makers, and educators, significantly advancing research in this important field.

About the Author

Thomas Ricento is Professor and Research Chair at the University of Calgary, Canada. He has published widely in the field of language policy and on the politics of language in North America. He was a Fulbright Professor in Colombia (1989) and Costa Rica (2000), and a visiting professor at universities in Chile, Germany, Spain, , and Switzerland. He was Director of English Language Programs at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities, Hikone, Japan from 1989-1991.

"Susan D. Blum wrote this vitally important book to understand the mismatch between learning, 'which students may love,' and schooling, 'which many students hate.' While so much of school and college is familiar to many of us, Blum uses anthropology's emphasis on holism and comparison to make it strange and interesting again. Extending beyond college campuses to consider all of mass schooling, 'I Love Learning; I Hate School'points out how many of the practices that are commonplace in today’s colleges and schools actually have a corrosive effect on student interest and engagement. It denaturalizes Western schooling to reveal its many 'oddities,’ including age segregation, decontextualized learning, an emphasis on grades, and the production of failure.

Importantly, motivation for learning is powerfully related to perceived relevance, sociality, and affective experience. All of this helps to explain, for example, why so many students today are more engaged with extracurricular activities than their academic work: because these activities are more tightly aligned with key human learning inclinations.

Many students find their time at college or university to be a very difficult, dissatisfying experience, something they endure and go through the motions with as a means to an end. Does it need to be like this?

The author, a professor of anthropology, had had enough and decided to dig deeper into the subject. For a long time she had been frustrated with her students’ performance and came to the conclusion that there is a concerning mismatch between the goals of the university and the needs of students. This research is clearly based on U.S. educational establishment experiences, although the U.S. system is far from unique to that country and thus many takeaway points can be relevant in other countries. This book mixes up the methodology of learning with the author’s own research into the problems that appear extant. It doesn’t make for pleasant reading; the subject that is, the book does a good job at delivering the “bad news”.

There is hope, says the author, who analyses what is going wrong and suggests how to change things to make classroom learning more relevant and engaging to modern-day needs. That’s the theory. Implementing it may be the greater challenge and first the system needs to accept and understand that the system itself might need to change. This book is not itself a direct roadmap for possible change. A lot needs to be considered and possibly implemented. Yet the author plants the seeds for change in the reader’s mind, gives clear reasoning why change may be necessary and details what the problems are perceived to be. One person cannot change the world, yet they can be part of the catalyst that may inspire the change process.

If you think the system is perfect, you have nothing to lose by reading this book since you are convinced your system is perfect and thus can easily debunk the book’s contents on logical grounds. However, for the rest, whether you are clearly seized on the idea for change from the get-go or just accept that something may be possibly improved upon, this book can give you a different perspective and possibly a lot more besides.

A highly recommendable, crucial read for many, and an engaging, thought-provoking read for the rest of us.

I love learning, I hate school

I downloaded a copy from Net Galley for an unbiased review.

The author loves learning and teaching and could not see for a long time why or how the education system in America failed many pupils. This despite the fact that she helped design a college curriculum which forced all students, including athletes, to take a term course in 'childhood studies' and she saw their stubborn rejection of what they saw as a pointless, retrograde step.

There's a broad look at various facets of the American education tiered system, which is based on the British system and copied around the world. The author recognised through speaking with students - why was that so hard to do?- and watching her own children, that some kids were better home schooled and others to take alternative routes.

I learnt a lot about the Establishment and as someone whose main memory of secondary education is that it was cold, boring and largely useless, years ago mind you, I recommend that anyone making education their career have a read of this book. Because I love learning and I was reading from the age of two and a half, and I've taken two third level qualifications to date, but I did not like school.

The Story of the Ace Fighter Pilot

Gabby: A Fighter Pilot’s Life

Francis Gabreski was born to poor immigrants in Oil City Pennsylvania. His father was able to buy a grocery store and Frank helped. After graduation from high school he went to Notre Dame and became interested in flying. Frank signed up to become an aviation cadet with the Army. He learned on various machines and the Link trainer. After graduating the course he was sent to Wheeler Field in Hawaii to fly fighter aircraft (P-36, P-40). At 8AM December 7, 1941 Frank saw the attack on Pearl Harbor. With others they salvaged what they could. He flew a P-36 to defend the base. Some pilots in P-40Bs shot down seven Japanese planes. He was sent to England in 1942 as part of the initial build-up and to learn about fighter tactics. He flew a Spitfire Mark IX which had a high rate of climb and maneuverability with faster speed and high altitude performance. It had a higher power-to-weight ratio than the P-40 (Chapter 4).

Military strategy in the 1930s advanced bombers to the detriment of fighters (Chapter 5). The Battle of Britain showed the need for interceptor fighters like the P-38 and P-47 (p.77). The turbo-supercharger gave high altitude performance to the P-47. There were new tactics (p.87). The P-47s stayed with and protected the bombers (p.103). There is a problem with tracer ammunition and their false trajectory (p.123). Armor-piercing incendiary was best (p.124). Two new improvements for the P-47 was water injection and the paddle-blade propellor (p.139). Gabby had the paint on his plane sanded for smoothness and then waxed (p.140). In July 1944 Gabreski became the top ace with 28 kills (p.166). But on July 20 his P-47 was damaged, he landed and was taken prisoner (Chapter 10).

Chapter 11 tells of his months as a POW until the Russian army arrived (p.199). There was a concentration camp nearby (p.200). Gabby felt proud to help defeat the Germans. In Chapter 12 he tells of his flying in an F-86 in Korea. There were differences with jet airplanes (p.211). Gabby won 6.5 victories in Korea, making him the only flyer to be an ace with both propeller and jet airplanes (Chapter13). They had to be careful to stay south of the Yalu river. A new flying formation proved more productive (p.237). He was later invited to the White House (p.246). The `Epilogue' tells of his later life with aircraft development, and overseas. After his retirement he worked for Grumman on Long Island. He was appointed president of the Long Island Railroad and inspected every inch of the line. A shortage of funds led to hardware problems. The design of the air conditioners eventually resulted in failures (p.261). The last page gives his philosophy.

This is a very readable book, but seems to cover his experiences in a very restrained manner. Surely he must have heard and seen a lot more than is written in this book. You can compare this to Paul Brickhill's "Reach for the Sky" or Larry Forrester's "Fly For Your Life" as more interesting books.

About the Author

Laura Bear is Associate Professor of Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics, UK. For nineteen years, she has carried out archival and ethnographic research in India, especially West Bengal. She is the author of Lines of the Nation: Indian Railway Workers, Bureaucracy and the Intimate Historical Self (2007), the forthcoming Navigating Austerity: State Debt and Speculation on a South Asian River (2014), and the novel The Jadu House (2000). She is a member of the Core Editorial Board for Economy and Society.�This volume developed from her leadership (with Professor Stephan Feuchtwang) of the Economic and Social Research Council-funded research network and seminar series ‘Conflicts in Time: Rethinking “Contemporary” Globalization’.

Perfect first book on chart reading

I was really surprised by this little book. I have read numerous books on technical analysis, but I picked it up because I am always looking for good entry books on the subject for friends who end up asking me about technical analysis. And this is now the one I will recommend. I've learned through reading a lot and through trial and error that the simpler the system the better, and nothing is gained from adding on all kinds of indicators and oscillators. The authors have reached the same conclusion and keep things very simple.
They are clearly relying to some degree, and for good reason, on the work of Andrew Lo, from MIT, who has written very technical, mathematical papers on various chart patterns and found several of them to be valid. They build very nicely from one concept to another with lots of charts to illustrate their points. Don't be throw off by the listing of 200 pages. Due to the size of the pages and the high number of charts, it reads as a much shorter book. But for a first book, I see this as a real positive. They just get right to the point.
Some people never accept the idea that charts might give a glimpse into the behavior of market participants, and that's fine. But for those who are not sure, this is a perfect book to start with. You'll get most of the many principles for drawing trend lines and for recognizing the important patterns, and then you can apply what you learn to charts going forward, and decide for yourself whether reading charts is for you or not. Much better than spending 2x or 3x more for many other books that you'll never get through.

The best way to start

This book is a very easy and fast read and gets to the point, clearly. I found I was on page 100 in less than an hour and I finished 2/3 of the book straight through before deciding to put it down (only because I had to go to bed).
Everything it teaches is fundamental and straightforward, the same introduction information you can find through hours of web searches, but here it is at a very low cost all in one place and all organized and easy to understand.
Of course it's a simple text, no deep analysis on the included material, and only a small amount of key material out of all that's out there in other resources, but the way it's presented, you keep finding new questions in your mind that make you want to go and research further. The book, being simple, doesn't leave you feeling short changed, it leaves you with a confidence as a newcomer to stocks and inspired to learn further.
If you start with this book and are meant to get involved in this stuff, you'll be fully prepared to get started and you'll know what your next steps are after this book - another book with more details on certain things you were introduced to here, or dive right into trading.
The one thing I'll point out that's specific about the text is that it is geared to medium term trades, those occurring over a few months span or longer, as opposed to a few days. They guide you to observe charts that establish patterns through more than a month of chart history, and then make your evaluation. I'm not sure if this can be applied to shorter term trades, but either way it's a good start.
I have 3 other books I bought all at once, I expect to learn everything I can. Being a beginner, I discovered this book by searching Amazon and reading people's reviews to find out what texts I should use to get started. By linking around from people's other recommendations within book reviews, I chose this book along with Toni Turner - Short term trading in the new stock market, Bruce Kamich - How Technical Analysis Works, and John Murphy - Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets.

Great introduction

A terrific introduction to 8 basic trend patterns, coupled with repetitive exercises forcing the reader to figure it out him/herself. A very few times I disagreed with the unnamed authors' solutions -- I think they miss better, stronger patterns. Also the book implies that if you read and work your way through you will be able to go out and trade successfully. I suspect that's not the case.

Excellent presentation and exercises. Cheap. A great buy and well worth the few hours it takes to work completely through. I am a somewhat experienced trader and I learned a lot.
