Tomislav Piasevoli is a Business Intelligence (BI) specialist with years of experience working with Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). He successfully implemented many still-in-use BI solutions, helped numerous people on MSDN forum, achieved the highest certification for SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS Maestro), and shared his expertise in form of MDX cookbooks. Tomislav currently works as a consultant at Piasevoli Analytics company (www.piasevoli.com) together with his brother Hrvoje. They specialize in Microsoft SQL Server Business Intelligence platform, SSAS primarily, and offer their BI skills worldwide. Great recipes

I was the technical reviewer for this book. I've worked with SSAS for years, but frankly often fumbled around with solutions due to the dearth of really good documentation and blog posts. I've learned MDX, like most, through trial and error...the "error" often only being discovered when my solution wouldn't scale anymore and I was pressed to refactor quickly.

If you use SSAS or MDX regularly, and even if you consider yourself an expert, you should still peruse this book. I found a number of recipes that I can incorporate into my daily life. I also found some new ideas and ways to use MDX that I hadn't thought about previously.

I liked the real-world examples best. Much better than the contrived code you'll see in many other books.

Best book to help you understand

I always found Jurisprudence very boring which made it difficult for me to read the whole chapters in those thick Juris books.
This book is a very good start. It highlights the key facts and elaborates them in a very simple and easy tone which makes it easy to understand the topic.
All the essays I wrote in my exam were partly taken from this book.

Brilliant exam revision tool

A great book for testing your knowledge as part of preparation for radiology exams. Even though the question style has the UK exam structure in mind, it's a fantastic way of identifying gaps in knowledge that need more work. Unlike some of the exam books I've used before, the questions have clearly been carefully considered and designed to make you think, with the minimum of ambiguity. A 'must buy' for all radiology residents undertaking the grim task of preparing for the exams......

I've read better books. Too confusing and missing "what to do" on possible errors in given code examples.

You can skip most of the first chapter if you are using Apache Solr 5 or higher. The installation part has changed quite a bit since Solr 5.

Further, I think people who are claiming this book to be the best book about Solr they've ever read, they haven't read the book "Solr in Action" from Manning yet. I think this book still contains too many jargon. I knew some Solr before reading the book and I still had to Google quite some terms and further explanation in the first chapters. Started with a few chapters of Manning and I think it's much better written, personally.

A book which explains how software works and how to get started with it, needs to be as clear as possible! The writer has failed in this part to my opinion. Information with "what to do" if you receive an error on the given code examples would be very handy as well!

For more than half a century, Gordon Walgren, lawyer, legislator and
lobbyist, has been a major player in Kitsap County politics. At 25, he won election as county prosecutor. It looked as though his political future was dead after he lost a notorious case. It didn’t help that he was romantically involved with the accused’s mistress. Then opportunity knocked and Walgren quickly re-climbed the political ladder. By 1975 he was Senate majority leader. Five years later, he was clearly ticketed for statewide office, attorney general and then, who knows?

It all came undone as a result of Gamscam, an FBI sting that ensnared
Walgren, the speaker of the house and a lobbyist. Charged with
racketeering, the three were accused of conspiring with men they believed
were mobsters to loosen state gambling laws. They did it for a piece of the
profits, the government said.

The case against Walgren was the thinnest, but a jury convicted
him along with the others. He spent two years in a federal prison.
He never admitted guilt and never stopped fighting to clear his name.
On his release, he successfully petitioned to win back his law license,
to overturn all but one conviction and to rebuild his reputation.

A great historical biography

I really enjoyed this book, being a Washington state and Kitsap County resident. It is an interesting historical account of local and state politics in the 1970’s and '80’s. It also is an autobiography of a remarkable man, Gordon Walgren, who had a meteoric rise before he was stung. Along the way, he hobnobbed with a number of interesting characters, from international leaders to fellow prisoners with mob connections. A delightful and interesting read.

About the Author
Paul Strangio is Associate Professor of Politics in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University. A political historian and biographer, he has written extensively about political leadership and political parties in Australia. One of his recent books is Neither Power Nor Glory: 100 Years of Political Labor in Victoria, 1856-1956 (2012). Paul has also been a long-time commentator on Australian politics in the print and electronic media. Paul 't Hart is Professor of Public Administration, Utrecht School of Governance, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. A former professor of political science at the Australian National University, since 2007 Paul has been a core faculty member of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government. He writes about political and public service leadership, crisis management, policy evaluation and public accountability. His latest book is Understanding Public Leadership (2014). James Walter is Professor of Politics in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. He has published widely on biography, political psychology, leadership, political thought and policy deliberation. His recent books include, Understanding Prime-Ministerial Performance: Comparative Perspectives (2013, with Paul Strangio and Paul 't Hart) and What Were They Thinking? The Politics of Ideas in Australia (2010).

‘So what do we know about the role of prime minister, and about that office’?

There’s been intense focus on the political leadership of prime ministers within Australia over the past couple of decades, and the changes in leadership over the past decade have certainly focussed our attention. We’ve had five prime ministers in the past ten years, while in the previous twenty years we’ve only had three. Is this a leadership crisis?

In this book, authors Paul Strangio, Paul t' Hart and James Walter examine the development of the role of prime minister in the period from 1901 to 1949. Their focus is not so much on the sixteen individuals who occupied the office of prime minister during this forty-nine year period but on the history of the prime ministership. In doing this, the authors have looked at three separate elements: first, how the role of prime minister was borrowed from the Westminster model, adapted to Australian circumstances at Federation, and then developed in practice; secondly how the role has evolved taking into account the attributes which each prime minister has brought to his occupancy of the position; and finally the circumstances (war, peace, economic prosperity or crisis) in which each prime minister held office. A second volume is intended, to cover the period from 1949 to 2015.

The book is organised into seven chapters, entitled:
1. The Colonial Inheritance
2. Ringmaster of the Early Commonwealth: Alfred Deakin
3. Prime-ministerial Polarities: Andrew Fisher and Billy Hughes
4. Thwarted Ambition: Stanley Bruce and James Scullin
5. Popularity versus Leadership: Joseph Lyons and Robert Menzies
6. A Nation-building Tandem: John Curtin and Ben Chifley
7. Settling the Prime Ministership

I found this book very interesting. I especially enjoyed reading Chapter 5, for its more nuanced assessment of Joseph Lyons. While I’ve been aware of every Australian prime minister since Robert Menzies, I’ve never really considered how the role of prime minister has evolved since Federation. Interestingly, while the prime minister is seen as the most important person in the Australian Parliament, the role of prime minister is not mentioned in the Australian Constitution. I’d recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Australian Federal politics.

It's amazing how digital photography has allowed the photographer to act more like an illustrator or like a fine art painter then before. I miss the old vision but the future looks exciting and this book gives shows many great examples of the 'new' world in photography.

Not an effective survey

Bought this to have a visual survey of developments in 21st century art photography. This book wants to be it, but isnt. Grouped in 5 categories: Something borrowed, ie appropriation, Layers of reality ie compositing, All the world is stage, ie arrangements, Hand and eye, ie manipulation of the print, and Post-Photojournalism. These cover the major areas of new approaches to photography, and each section has at least one really creative example, and at least two really weak ones. The selection quality of the examples is weak at best. And famous practitioners that were the innovators in each area are not included or even mentioned. The book intros to each section doe not give an overview of the approach but rather trivial details of the work of the particular artists. Disappointed that the book doesnt fulfill the survey function it intends.
