Very Sweet

I really enjoyed these two stories about Hugh and Jack. It was funny, delightful, sad and romantic.
A bit strange to read just about the same words in Hugh's story as in Jack's, even though it was from Hugh's perspective this time instead of Jack's.
Both were so sweet!

I don't remember how the story was narrated but I did enjoy this story. It is sad to think that these days, or in the old days family pushed and harassed their kids if they were nerdy or stuttered etc. I enjoy this book alot!

A Groom's Promise

The Bride’s Choice
PLOT: Jack is immediately drawn to Maybell. She senses sweetness in him and is drawn to him as well despite his stuttering. Unfortunately, her father would prefer to have Jack’s brother Hugh as a son-in-law.
PROS: I liked Jack and Maybell. The plot was interesting.
CONS: Though I liked Jack, I thought bits of his behavior were unbelievable. I figured much of his bumbling was supposed to come off as comedic, but when he’s hiding behind his hand and other items, I thought it made him come off as pathetic. I’m very shy and I’ve never done anything so ridiculous.
When the Whistle Blows
PLOT: Hugh first meets Winifred on the train when he ruins her hat. He purchases her another very expensive hat as a replacement. This basically bankrupts him and he enters an agreement with Maybell’s father to marry her.
Honestly, I couldn’t get into this story. It fills in the gaps of what was happening with Winifred and Hugh throughout the first story. I didn’t really feel a connection between these two characters. I didn’t like them and I wasn’t interested in their story.
