Great Strategies

This book gives a solid explanation of how we store our memories and why they sometimes fail to stick. I have always thought that I had a poor memory... now I know that it was not poor memory but poor encoding (getting it into my brain). While I got through college reasonably well using rote techniques I always felt that I lacked a deeper understanding of the information I was being taught.... NOW I know why....I wasn't making connections at all...
If you know you are intelligent but think you have a poor memory READ this book...You may just lack the proper encoding skills
She gives great advice of how to get things to skick in your brain....
I KNOW... I didn't even have to look at the book to remember the author's name.... gotta be a first

BEST memory book to date! 10 stars!

I have all the Harry Loryane books... Shame on me for turning to cheap memory tricks(mnemonics)to ace my studies(I was actually hoping this book was on mnemonics, imagine my disappointment when I found out that it wasn't, and later on my sheer exuberance after mastering true memory!). I had some pretty serious learning problems prior to reading this book...

Before, I could not even recall what happened in a paragraph that I had just read but now I can recall an entire book after just one reading! and most important of all understand its main contentions and all the little nuances. Memory is so fleeting, especially my own that any device to capture it is priceless!

Basically the key to long term transferal or understanding itself is connection: this is why mnemonics is so much more effective than rote rehearsal and the techniques in Memory Key so much more effective than mnemonics. You only understand something to the extent that you can relate it to knowledge that you already have. While mnemonics forms a superficial connection, the Memory key will teach you how to connect on deeper principles (categorizing, expertise, sensitive patterns, super clustering, priming, elaborations etc etc...)

The bottom line is this is the best book on memory improvement, the very first thing it teaches you that memory itself is plural...If you want to remember dates, where your lost glasses are, how to pitch a ball properly or like myself, what you read and study then buy this book, it's peppered with practical and applicable techniques and principles. I suggest reading the note-taking chapter first so that you can properly take notes on the book itself. Some books are meant to be tasted, others to be swallowed and MEMORY KEY to be chewed and digested.

Practical advice for using memory strategies

While most books on memorization usually describe memory techniques and strategies, Fiona McPherson's book takes the reader a step further. I have read over a dozen books in the area of memory, and I have discovered through experience the strengths and weaknesses of different memory techniques. In this book however, it teaches the reader how to USE memory strategies rather than just simply the techniques.
The book's approach can be aptly summarized in the phrase, "Smart selection is better than total recall." That is, effort put into understanding what you memorize, as well as why, is better and more effective for long-term recall. This is also true from my own experiences with memorization techniques. The book does not advocate placing everything into working memory. Instead, there is a balance between the cost of a memory technique (in time and effort) and using memory aids, such as creating lists. Memory recall is based not simply on techniques, but also in knowing how memory works as well as why specific strategies are effective. Like other memory books, this book also emphasizes frequent review of information. However unlike other books it provides practical tips on effective reviewing. Also the chapter on "Study Strategies" is an excellent chapter worth the price of the book. It breaks down the details for note-taking to a level that makes sense. It also describes creative ways to summarize information; these are in turn tremendous aids to understanding and ultimately, memorization of the material.
Some of the weaknesses in the book include terms that are not clearly defined for the reader at first (cues, codes) as well as a number of typographical errors (p. 42 - " traget" is target and "sues" is cues). Overall though, it is nice to pick up a book, read it and have my own experiences concerning memory validated in the book's advice. Fiona McPherson's book fills a nice niche for how to be aware of memory strategies and in the practical aspect of applying memory techniques.

This scholarly work proposes that an integral feature of both film and television is the "mobilized virtual gaze." This virtual gaze "is not a direct perception but a received perception mediated through representation." Also, the virtual gaze is a standard part of postmodern society, along with a diminished capacity to retain the past. Drawing from a wide range of sources, Friedberg traces the development of the virtual gaze from Jeremy Bentham's proposed glass prison, the Paris arcades, the creation of department stores, architecture, tourism, and the shopping mall. If the disappearance of history is indeed a symptom of postmodernity, then the author feels that movies and especially videos have added significantly to this development. Her interesting thesis is well presented. Academic collections should consider.

Solid Advice Geared Toward Experienced Marathoners

I don't think I have read every book about marathon training but sometimes it seems like I have. Here we have an experienced marathon coach's approach.

The basics are all covered here. There is less "atta boy - go get 'em!" than most books about marathon training and more specific advice geared toward more experienced marathoners.

Quite a bit of emphasis is given to core training and to the concept of doing one or two less runs per week (to be replaced by cross training), while improving the quality of the remaining work outs. There is even a brief section about ultramarathon and triathlon training.

The reason I bought this book was to try to become more inspired to actually do my core work out routine. The detailed section on core work outs and strength training is solid. The training plans near the end of the book seem to be well conceived.

The one thing I resent is that I bought this book based on the great reviews on Amazon.com and later read a comment on one of the reviews that pointed out that there are eight short, glowing reviews all posted on the same day by five (or six?) unique reviewers - each of whom has reviewed only this book. Upon rereading these reviews they seem like they were (possibly) all written by the same person, or maybe a group of friends. One reviewer got a marathon PR and another had all their injuries disappear - just three weeks after the book was released - really? So basically I bought the book based on somebody's fake reviews! Whose? - the author? The author's friends and family? The publisher? Who knows. Maybe there really were eight unique reviewers who all posted short five star reviews on the same day but never got around to reviewing any other books - it's hard to say.

Anyway - *Smart Marathon Training,* although it isn't my favorite book in the genre, has its merits and is a decent resource geared more toward more experienced marathoners.

Training plans not for experienced beginner runners.

This book provides a lot of information and what seems like a reasonable plan for someone who is truly an intermediate runner. I have run two half-marathons prior to ordering this book and was interested in using the training method/plans in this book for my third.

Up until now I have been a Couch to 5k-er (c25k) and Galloway walk/runner. I completed both of my half marathons using the walk/run method combined with the mileage plans from Hal Higdon's novice half marathon training plans. Bottom line there... all I have ever done is long/slow runs. I have never been a part of a track team nor have any formal experience with drills, hill repeats, speed work, or tempo runs. So, this book is a good introduction to all of that. However, the training plans in the book start with an "intermediate" level of running experience...which I clearly don't have after reviewing the plans.

The intermediate half marathon plan gives a 7 week schedule leading up to the half marathon. The mileage starts with an 8-mile Long Run and 7-mile Tempo Run in week 1! Although I just finished a half marathon last week, I am certainly not at the level to jump right into a 7 mile "TEMPO" run... which is a long hard sustained fast paced effort. My first problem is that I am used to walk/running rather than steady running only. My second problem is that in order to get to a place that I can run a 7 mile Tempo run.. I need a plan... and this is where the book doesn't help me. There is no plan for how to get from a base level of running fitness - to the first week of the intermediate plan. I wish I could find a Horowitz training plan for that gap - because the methods and schedule for his training plan seems ideal for me.

Pretty disappointing to receive a book that starts on page 32. I think all this on demand publishing has a lot to do with it.

from what I scanned before putting it back in the envelope to be returned, nothing earth shattering in the book.

About the Author
Stephen Mateo is originally from Toronto, Canada. He began his career as an actor, over twenty years ago, studying in Los Angeles. Stephen's acting career has been grounded in television and theater, landing co- starring roles on various sitcoms, and appearing Off-Broadway in the hit The Crumple Zone both in New York and Los Angeles. It was soon after that, that he decided to take hold of his career and began writing. Stephen wanted to write material that meant something to him, in a very personal way. In hopes that the stories would resonate with others, and encourage them to think about their own lives. He likes to develop characters that people relate to, or at least, can emotionally invest them selves in. Stephen's first attempt at this was a full-length screenplay titled, Dear John. Two things inspired him to write Dear John. First, he wanted to tell a story of love, to show people that the experience of finding love is no different, no matter whom you are. The second was freedom-the freedom to make our own decisions. Then Stephen decided to tell the story of Journey. Journey is a story of the lengths one will go to in search for freedom: the simultaneous desire to find our own place in the world, and the guilt we feel over separating ourselves from our family. I want to say to anyone who is reading this book is, "never give up on your dreams". This book is living proof that dreams do come true, not only for me the Author, but also for Tomas Castellano, the main character in this story. And if it weren't for his courage . . . there would be no JOURNEY.

Jouney - an amazing story!

I purchased this book not expecting a lot from it - new writer, first book. How good could it be - I thought. Let me tell you that I was unequivocally, 100% wrong!! Once I started reading, the story reached out, tugged at my heartstrings & wouldn't let go until I finished it. What an amazing, wonderful story! It made me cry several times & if I can say that about a book, it is awesome indeed.

Based on the life of Stephen Mateo's father, we are led from his childhood in the Canary Islands to the present day in the U.S. & Canada. Something his family was never aware of until the night before his 50th Wedding Anniversary. His journey shows his courage, his fortitude & his love of family but those are just words.

Do yourself a favor & buy this book - you can't go wrong & you won't be sorry. I'm so glad I went on this Journey!

Terrific Story

I thought "Journey" was a great summer read and have recommended it to others. Stephen Mateo's father gave him the gift of a wonderful, heartfelt and nail-biting true story that Stephen rendered beautifully on the page. I was impressed with the way Stephen evoked the Canary Islands and a time and place that was so specific to his father's own journey. I didn't know as much as I thought I knew about Franco's rule, and this book did a great job of filling in the blanks. Too, the pace of the book was great as I read from chapter to chapter and marveled at the travails his father went through as he left his family for a new life. I am so glad I read the book and can't wait for the movie version to be produced. Bravo, Stephen!

A wonderful Journey

Journey is a phenomenal adventure about a boy and his escape from the tyranny of the Francisco Franco dictatorship of the Canary Islands in the 1940's. The story also dives into issues of family, friendship, romance, and immigration. What I loved the most about Journey was how incredibly visual the story was. While reading it, I was able to see the tale unfold, as if a movie was playing in my mind. It was an easy read, and once I started, I was not able to put it down from cover to cover, reading the book in its entirety in just over 3 � hours. I HIGHLY recommend Journey for anyone who loves a good adventure story. I really loved it!
